School Renaming. Naomi Brooks Elementary School is the top choice among the names being considered by the School Board to replace Matthew Maury Elementary School. Brooks, who passed away in 2020, was a native of Alexandria and a teacher at Alexandria elementary schools. A final vote is scheduled on April 8. The new name will take effect in the fall.
Historical Marker. The City has installed a sign with information about and photos from the history of Rosemont at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Rosemont Avenue, as part of the “Alexandria Heritage Trail.” (Unfortunately, there are a few mistakes on the sign – which we’re asking that the City correct.)
Primary Election. Although the deadline for independent candidates for Mayor, Council, Commonwealth’s Attorney, and Sheriff is not until June 8 (the same day as the primary election), the deadline for primary filings was March 25, so Alexandrians should soon have a definitive list of who the Democratic and Republican candidates for City offices will be. The City elections website is https://www.alexandriava.gov/Elections.
Coronavirus Vaccines. In addition to the Health Department, vaccines are increasingly available to qualified individuals from pharmacies, including CVS (https://www.cvs.com/immunizations/covid-19-vaccine), Harris Teeter (https://www.harristeeter.com/covidcare), Safeway (https://www.safeway.com/pharmacy/covid-19.html), and Giant (https://giantfood.com/pages/covid-info).
